The extracellular matrix

The cells that make up the skin are surrounded by an extracellular matrix that fulfils biological functions such as cell adhesion, migration or signalling, and mechanical functions such as resistance, elasticity and hydration. To fulfil these functions, the extracellular matrix is composed of fibrous structural proteins, such as collagen or elastin, as well as glycosaminoglycans, which collaborate with the proteins to form a complex network that nourishes, protects and gives life to the cells.

Glycosaminoglycans are natural polymers with a high capacity for association with water molecules and different biomolecules, thus allowing the extracellular matrix to be hydrated and smooth at all times and all cellular functions to develop properly, and they are the medium through which cells move and communicate.
