Call: HAZITEK ESTRATEGICO 2020

Project co-financed by the Basque Government and FEDER funds, under the HAZITEK business R&D support programme.

The BIO3D project “Research in additive manufacturing solutions of biomaterials for biomedical products” led by CREATECH MEDICAL S.L., and in which HISTOCELL participates along with 5 other Basque companies, aims to research and develop new biomaterials for processing by additive manufacturing, new bioprinters adapted to these biomaterials, new 3D printed biomedical products and the associated regulatory. The consortium will be supported by the participation of 8 Agents of the Basque Science, Technology and Innovation Network who will contribute new knowledge and new technologies to research into the formulation of biomaterials for their application in 3D printing techniques, and to research into these bio-inks in final products manufactured using additive technologies.

Within this project, HISTOCELL is looking for the production of printable bioink by extrusion and electrospinning from the regenerative materials of its current portfolio. It also seeks to blend its materials with decellularised extracellular matrix to enhance the regenerative effect. These developments will allow it to diversify its products into new applications in regenerative medicine such as skin grafts or regenerative scaffolds for muscle substitutes. To this end, the design and characterisation of new bioinks that are bioprintable, biocompatible, non-cytotoxic, and have post-printing morphological stability, so that their shape can be maintained in humid conditions to favour cell adhesion and proliferation, will be addressed. The new bioinks will be applied in electrospinning and 3D bioprinting processes, the main technologies used in the manufacture of scaffolds for regenerative medicine.
